DSC_0145South Lake Tahoe Schedule ~ January 26th – 28th
Fri. Jan.26th – Noon – Blue Angel Café 1132 Ski Run Blvd, South Lake Tahoe, CA, 96150
Single Pointed Meditation & Sacred Item Blessing
Learn Samatha or Single Pointed Meditation which help ones thoughts become clear, calm and stable and can be used as a daily practice. Followed by Q & A
Also, bring in your small sacred items, such as statues, mala beads, prayer flags, jewelry etc. to be blessed by the lama.

Fri. Jan.26th – 7PM *Ritual – Blue Angel Café 1132 Ski Run Blvd, South Lake Tahoe, CA, 96150
Chay Drol Healing Ceremony
Literally translated, ‘Chay Drol’ means to make free of obstacles. Chay Drol is a ritual that helps to remove the obstacles that prevent one from achieving enlightenment.
The procedure begins with the Lama going into deep meditation and generating himself in the form of a deity. He then places colored strings and pieces of cloth on various parts of the participant’s body.
Through ritual, the strings and pieces of cloth will be transformed to physically represent the obstacles of the participant.
Finally, the Lama will use ‘Wisdom Weapons’ to cut the ‘obstacles’ from the participant, thereby freeing him/her and opening the door to liberation. A colorful and participatory ceremony.

Sat. Jan. 27th – Noon Workshop – Blue Angel Café 1132 Ski Run Blvd, South Lake Tahoe, CA, 96150
Butter Sculpture & Calligraphy (please pre-register)
The monks will work with children and adults to create traditional sculptures made from butter, as has been done in Tibet for over 800 years.
Due to both its plentitude and highly elastic qualities, Tibetans have found butter to be very conducive to sculpture. The butter has been shaped into Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, flowers, animals, and auspicious symbols. These sculptures are then used to decorate ritual offering cakes made from barley flour. In Tibet, especially during Monlam (the Great Prayer Festival), butter sculpture contests were held among the major monasteries, and were often over 12 feet high! This workshop will begin with a demonstration by the monks and will be followed by the opportunity for each participant to make his/her own butter sculpture. Length: 1 to 1.5 hour.
In addition the monks will demonstrate beautiful Tibetan Calligraphy.

Sat. Jan. 27th – 7PM *Ritual – Blue Angel Café 1132 Ski Run Blvd, South Lake Tahoe, CA, 96150
Vajrasattva ~ Empowerment
Start the New Year with a blessing that cleanses and purifies. Vajrasattva (Buddha of Purification) Vajrasattva is the Buddhist deity of Purification. The practice of the Vajrasattva deity purifies all negative actions committed by our body, through our speech, and in our minds. All that has been contaminated through our own negativities will be cleansed, and we will be able to begin afresh. The Vajrasattva practice is also capable of uprooting and purifying the negative imprints that we have carried over from our previous lives. This empowerment will include the transmission of the 100 Syllable Mantra.

Sun. Jan. 28th– Noon Workshop (please pre-register) – Blue Angel Café 1132 Ski Run Blvd, South Lake Tahoe, CA, 96150
Eight Auspicious Symbols & Sand Mandala Workshop (please pre-register) Learn how to draw the eight auspicious symbols, which are very commonly used on ritual and household items to bring good fortune. Also, try drawing with sand as the monks will demonstrate how the colored sand is used to create a sand mandala. All ages are welcome for this workshop, bring the kids.

Sun. Jan. 28th- 7PM – Blue Angel Café 1132 Ski Run Blvd, South Lake Tahoe, CA, 96150

Monks Return January 2018!

ad8e4a_a87a730b6a53498989b871df8659d699-mv2 (2)The Tibetan monks of Gaden Shartse Monastery return to El Dorado County January 1st – 14th, 2018.

The Tibetan monks of Gaden Shartse return to the foothills of El Dorado County January 1st through the 14th, 2018 at our NEW LOCATION, the Diamond Springs Center, 851 Pleasant Valley Road, a half mile east of the Post Office.

After missing a year of touring in 2017 because of visa problems, five monks are now in the United States and have been doing residencies in communities, colleges and churches from Southern California to Texas, Aspen to Iowa over the past several months.

Those of us in Placerville Friends of Tibet are very excited to have them returning for their 14th year to our community, and as always, they will be presenting a full schedule of ceremonies, events, workshops, empowerments, personal, house and business blessings, and of course, the beautiful creation of the Manjushri sand mandala. (More on that in a future blog post.)

Moving to the new location in Diamond Springs for this tour has been a hard and long-considered decision after thirteen very successful years of residencies at the Cozmic Cafe in Placerville. However, we are more than happy to be helping inaugurate the beautiful new Diamond Springs Center of Healing Arts and Training, thanks to the open welcome we’ve been given by Diane Broussard at her recently opened facility.

We are in the final planning stages for the visit and will have a full schedule available for download soon. Check back here for regular updates, and be sure to check out our Facebook page at for all the details.

If you wish to be a volunteer, and there are plenty of volunteer roles to fill, call 530-306-2797 or email If you wish to join the Planning Committee, join us this Sunday, December 3rd from 3-5pm. Call 530-748-9365 for directions.

“Tashi delek!” to all of you for your continued support of the Tibetan people! We’ll look forward to seeing you (and the monks!) very soon.

After an incredibly successful two weeks of full-house events, the Tibetan monks of Gaden Shartse Phukhang pulled out of Placerville today and headed for Grass Valley, where they will begin another two full weeks of events, including the creation of the “Eight Auspicious Symbols” sand mandala. (Downloadable schedule for Grass Valley here: Grass Valley January 15th – January 31st. They’ll also be headed to Auburn for events February 5th – 14th. For Auburn schedule, see

The monks’ visit to the Cozmic Cafe in Placerville included the creation of the Green Tara Sand Mandala, the Ched Drol and Vajravadarana Healing Rituals, Sand Mandala-making and Butter Sculpture workshops, Children’s Story Hour of Jataka Tales and Tibetan folktales, several Dharma Talks, and a Tibetan Cultural Night in Cameron Park. In addition they offered innumerable personal and house blessings and individual healing rituals.

This marks the 12th (or 14th, but who’s counting?) year that Placerville Friends of Tibet has hosted an extended visit by touring Tibetan monks, primarily from the Gaden Shartse monastery in India, also other Tibetan monastics have also visited throughout the years.

Placerville has always been a much loved “home away from home” for the touring monks: our majestic and snow-covered (in a good year) Sierra Nevada mountains remind them of their own beloved Himalayas, and the warm and generous hearts of our local residents have made them comment more than a few times that visiting Placerville is always a pleasure and financially one of the best stops they make on their travels throughout the U.S.

If you’d be interested in helping Placerville Friends of Tibet with a future visit by the Tibetan monks, please contact us at or call 530-748-9365. We’d love to have your help! We will be having a get together and “wrap-up” for this visit on Sunday, January 31st, 2016, most likely at the Cozmic Cafe around noon. (Details pending.) If you’d like to attend, please contact us at the email or phone number above.
